Skylark IX Recovery Project seeks help in UK public vote to win £10,000!

The Dumbarton-based Skylark IX Recovery Project has been short-listed in a UK-wide public vote with the chance to win £10,000.

The charity, which helps people in West Dunbartonshire on their journey of recovery from addictions, hopes local people will help them win the For the People Award 2021 which recognises charities for their work within the community.

Supporters just need to take a few seconds to vote online.

Claire McDade, Project Manager at the Skylark IX Recovery Project, says:

“We’re thrilled to have been short-listed in the public vote for the UK For the People Award.

“With £10,000, we can do more with the people we work with who need our help most – our volunteer trainees in our boatbuilding workshop.

“It will help us keep the programme going, giving those on a journey of recovery from addictions a place to meet other people and learn valuable and transferable woodcraft and boatbuilding skills for the future.

“We hope as many people as possible can visit our website, Facebook or Twitter pages and take two seconds to click and vote for us.”

The Skylark IX Recovery Project runs a skiffbuilding workshop helping volunteer trainees from Alternatives West Dumbarton Community Drug Service learn new, transferable woodwork skills by building a 22ft St Ayles Rowing Skiff. The workshop is housed in the Scottish Maritime Museum’s Denny Tank on Castle Street.

The Skylark IX Recovery Project also delivers free and therapeutic heritage and arts-related workshops inspired by the story of the ‘Dunkirk Little Ship’ Skylark IX at the heart of the Project.

Workshops helping adults and young people connect and develop new skills and interests have also included Make Do and Mend, wood whittling and the creation of a Community Lockdown Patchwork Quilt.

The For the People Awards 2021, which is run by Marsh Commercial, recognises the fantastic work happening up and down the UK to make a positive difference in local communities.

The vote closes on Thursday 25 November and winners will be announced in December 2021.
