Skylark embarks on a new direction

The Skylark IX Recovery Trust is embarking on an exciting new direction this year.

During lockdown our plans to rebuild the boat had to be put on hold. Instead we decided to carry out an in depth condition survey which unfortunately revealed greater problems with her structural integrity than previously thought. With the help and advice of marine surveyors and other maritime and heritage experts the Skylark IX Recovery Trust has made the difficult and painful decision not to rebuild and sail her again. An in depth options appraisal carried out over the winter months has now helped the Trust to decide on the way forward.

Whilst everyone involved with this inspirational project is very sad that she will not sail again we are very excited to announce our plans for a brand new development for the people of West Dunbartonshire: The Spirit of Skylark Centre.

This new interactive interpretation and boatbuilding facility will be based at the Denny Tank at the Scottish Maritime Museum.

Skylark herself will take pride of place on display in the heart of the centre, which will also feature a brand new cafe, exhibition and boat building workshop.

The Centre will provide a hub for training, skills development, educational and leisure opportunities for people across West Dunbartonshire.

It will also add a new dimension to the visitor economy and experience alongside the many heritage attractions within Dumbarton itself.

Alternatives West Dumbarton Community Drug Service, the Scottish Maritime Museum and Archipelago Boatbuilding school will be our partners in this innovative new development for the town.
